Body-Part Nouns as a Source of Reflexives: Towards a Grammaticalization Account of . . .

چکیده

It is well-known that nouns denoting the human body or parts of it are an important source of polysemy in the languages of the world. One such example, the development of Georgian tav’head’ into a reflexive anaphor, is the object of the present paper. After a typological overview of reflexivization strategies in Georgian, we present an account, both synchronic and diachronic, of the rise of various tav-based strategies in grammaticalization terms. We then investigate motivations for the use of the fairly grammaticalized POSS + tavstrategy in a peculiarity of Georgian syntax called Object Camouflage, and finally discuss an intensifier reading of reflexives in subject function, suggesting a potential counterexample to the allegedly unidirectional development from intensifiers to reflexives.

Where do grammatical morphemes come from? On the development of grammatical markers from lexical expressions, demonstratives, and question words

Research on grammaticalization has shown that grammatical morphemes are commonly derived from content words, notably from nouns and verbs. For instance, adpositions are frequently derived from body part terms (cf. Heine et al. 1991) and future tense auxiliaries are often based on motion verbs (cf. Bybee et al. 1994). Of course, not every grammatical marker can be traced back to a content word; ...

Degrammaticalization, exaptation and loss of inflection: Evidence from Slavonic

Recent work in grammaticalization has highlighted cases where former inflectional affixes have gained independence on an unexpected path towards clitic or full-word status. Such cases challenge the hypothesized unidirectionality of grammaticalization at the formal level (word > clitic > affix). This article considers two cases from Slavonic languages: in the first, various Slavonic languages re...

Retrieval and Encoding Interference: Cross-Linguistic Evidence from Anaphor Processing

The main goal of this paper was to disentangle encoding and retrieval interference effects in anaphor processing and thus to evaluate the hypothesis predicting that structurally inaccessible nouns (distractors) are not considered to be potential anaphor antecedents during language processing (Nicol and Swinney, 1989). Three self-paced reading experiments were conducted: one in German, comparing...
